“Civil Society Preventing Genocide and Mass Atrocities”

By Aleksandar Brisevac, The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy.

Between May 27th and June 1st 2013, the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin held a Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy and Human Rights “Towards a Global Human Rights Culture: The Need for a Collective Alliance in the Protection & Promotion of Human Rights”.

The conference provided the platform for activists, experts, academics and world leaders involved in the field of Human Rights to come together, create alliances, and better coordinate their activities, thus promoting better implementation and enforcement of Human Rights in a more effective nature.

One of the speakers at the Symposium was Ms. Blanche Foster, an executive director of Darfur Rehabilitation Project Inc.During the Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy and Human Rights held at the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy, Ms. Foster gave a lecture on the topic of “Collaboration of Civil Society in Preventing Genocide and Mass Atrocities”.

Ms. Foster tried to explain the difficulties facing the small group of Darfurians living on the U.S. soil, and who was deeply concerned about the human rights tragedy occurring in their homeland in western Sudan, the tragedy that established the Darfur Rehabilitation Project.

DRP members travel the U.S. to inform the public and bear witness to the current genocide, rape and displacement of their families and compatriots. DRP seeks justice for victims of human rights abuses through its Darfur Victims’ Project (DVP). Darfur-Darfur Dialogues, since 2004, helped to sow the seeds of peace and prepare for the long-term rehabilitation of the Darfur region.

“The Vision-

A secure Darfur with a revitalized economy, an abundance of basic human services and a rising level of education in Darfur – and in all of The Sudan.”
